Computing in Communication Networks

The aim of this course is to illustrate how the emerging paradigms of Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization will impact the development of future systems and networks, both from the theoretical/formal as well as from the practical perspective.

The course will provide a comprehensive overview of the individual building blocks (software-defined networking; network function virtualization; information-centric networks) enabling the concept of computing in future networks. We will start with use cases and concepts and then delve into the technological enablers (Mininet; Docker) and future innovations (machine learning; network coding; compressed sensing).

Participants will learn how to implement these concepts on personal computers, and practical hands-on activities will be proposed with realistic use cases. These activities aim to bridge the gap between theory and implementation and will be supported by several examples. We will utilize a pre-built Virtual Machine (ComNetsEmu), which can be easily extended for new experiments. Instructions for downloading the Virtual Machine will be provided to all course participants.

By the end of the course, participants will have gained a comprehensive understanding of Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization, explored innovative technologies, and developed practical skills through hands-on exercises. The course is designed to be accessible and relevant to individuals interested in the future of networking and its potential to transform systems and networks.
