Innovative Tiling Methodologies for the Design of Phased Array Antennas
Nicola Anselmi
Publications | nicola.anselmi.1 [at] unitn.it (Email)
Phased array antennas are affected by extremely high implementative costs. For this reason unconventional tiled architectures are nowadays a good compromise between the costs and the performances of the antenna, further simplifying the architecture by composing the antenna using few tiles modules. My research deals with the design of clustered phased array antennas characterized by an irregular organization of tiles modules, whit the aim to optimally cover the entire available aperture.

In the next generation of wireless communications (5G) and radar communications that require high data rate or the high level of flexibility in the adaptation of the radiation pattern, phased arrays are likely to be able to operate over large operation bandwidth. The research is focused on a synthesizing procedure based on convex programming and convex relaxation techniques in order to generate focused, difference, shape-beam (e.g., flat-top, cosecant, isoflux) patterns that can operate over a wide bandwidth.

Decision making is the fundamental process in command and control situation rooms operating in emergency management scenarios. The aim of the research project is to define strategies for the automatic evaluation (by the proposed decision support system) of the psychological traits and features of the personnel interacting within the emergency management scenario in order to define improved approaches for resource allocation. The objective is to infer and employ the social network information in order to reduce failures as well as conflicts in emergency situations.
New Paradigm in Reflectarray Design Through Non-Radiating Currents

Reflectarray antennas represent one of the most appealing technologies for designing high-efficiency and reliable antennas for satellite applications (e.g., radar and communication). The proposed methodology will allow the designer to specify constraints/simplifications on the antenna surface current distribution thanks to an innovative exploitation of its non-radiating (NR) component, that becomes a powerful additional degree-of-freedom (DoF) in the synthesis process.

We take LoRa outside the city limits, exploring how the environment affects its core communication properties. Specifically, we offer two novel parameter explorations to understand first how vegetation affects communication range and second how antennas change radio behavior.

Nowadays, advanced radar and communications applications require high-performance antenna systems able to jointly satisfy challenging geometric and HW/SW constraints. In this framework, unconventional array technology, thanks to the irregular arrangement of elements and/or of TRMs in the beam forming network, is showing promising results. However, the design of unconventional antenna arrays requires methodologies able to deal with strongly nonlinear problems in an effective fashion, in order to enable the synthesis of large arrays as well. Toward this ends, my research is aimed at presenting innovative design methodologies for the efficient synthesis of unconventional array architectures.
Compressive Sensing and Sparse Processing for Direction-of-Arrival Estimation in Real Antenna System
Mohammad Abdul Hannan
Publications | mohammadabdul.hannan [at] unitn.it (Email) | Website

The proliferation of wireless services, the Internet of things, and the next-generation cellular networks are boosting the diffusion of wireless devices. In this regard, the estimation of the directions-of-arrival (DoA) of signals impinging on a direction finding system is a key problem for the evolution of future wireless systems. Recently, the sparse processing of signals for DoA estimation in the framework of Compressive Sensing (CS) has received great attention as it provides accurate and real time estimation with no a-prior knowledge of number of incoming signals. This work is aimed at exploiting the CS technique for DoA estimation in real antenna systems for different applications.

5G networks are expected to support various applications with diverse requirements. Cloud-RAN and densely deployed small cells are two of the tools at disposal of MNOs to cope with such challenges. To mitigate the fronthaul requirements imposed by the Cloud-RAN architecture, several functional splits have emerged. However, the selection of the appropriate functional split remains a challenging task, since many parameters must be considered to make such a decision. My research work will investigate the trade-offs associated with different functional splits in the RAN protocol stack with the goal of developing design guidelines to MNOs for deploying flexible and cost-efficient 5G networks.

5G is characterized by its diversity of services and their requirements such as low-latency, higher data throughput and higher capacity. To this regard,Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) plays a vital role in providing a low-latency service environment at the edge of the cellular networks. As a result,Mobile Network Operators can now open their RAN's to third party application developers to build a variety of services for vertical segments. My research focuses on exploiting Artificial Intelligence techniques to satisfy the challenging service requirements and to design and develop a modular MEC architecture that can be practically deployed in the commercial networks in a cost efficient manner.
