Study Plan
Doctoral students have to acquire a certain amount of credits and complete some educational activities during their PhD programme depending on the cycle they are enrolled in.
At the beginning of each of the first two years students are required to compile a Study plan by the Student's Career which must be approved by the tutor (first year) and the advisor (second year).
Educational programme for:
PhD students from 35° cycle onward
Doctoral students are required to acquire at least 12 course credits during the first two academic years, with a required minimum of 6 credits during the first year.
Each educational activity, if successfully completed, gives the student a total of 3 credits.
By the end of the first year at least 6 course credits must be obtained by passing:
- Research Methodology (3 credits)
- Academic Writing for Science and Engineering (3 credits)
By the end of the second year at least 12 course credits must be obtained by passing:
- Research Methodology (3 credits) – first year
- Academic Writing for Science and Engineering (3 credits) – first year
- at least 2 technical courses (6 credits) chosen among: doctoral courses offered by the ICT International Doctoral School (ICTDS); doctoral courses offered also by other universities; online courses.
By the end of the third year: participation in at least 3 seminars offered by the ICTDS or in a Summer / Winter school of at least 20 hours long.
All credits are acquired upon approval by the PhD student’s tutor/advisor.
Any variation in how course credits are assigned must be approved by the Executive Committee.
Courses must be followed after enrolment in the Ph.D. Programme. Exceptions may be approved by the Executive Committee.
Courses that have contributed to other degrees that the student has completed do not apply.
No more than one course offered by EIT Digital can have its credits been recognized.
Online courses attendance gives credits if the courses fulfill all following requirements:
- absence of doctoral courses offered by ICTDS compatible with the student’s research topic;
- final examination/test at the end of the course;
- at least 40 hours long;
- approval by the Executive Committe.
Courses offered by other universities, Summer/Winter Schools, seminars and online courses need to have their credits recognised.

PhD students cycles 34° and 33°
Doctoral students are required to acquire 15 credits during the first two academic years, with a required minimum of 6 credits during the first year.
Each educational activity, if successfully completed, gives the student a total of 3 credits.
The 15 required credits must be acquired by passing:
- 3 courses from ICT doctoral courses (list of available courses)
- Research Methodology course
- 1 freely chosen course: doctoral/ M.Sc. course or Summer/Winter School. These courses can be offered externally to the ICT International Doctoral School as well.
- “Academic Writing for Science and Engineering” courses do not give any credits. However, attendance on such courses is mandatory.
No more than one course offered by EIT Digital can have its credits been recognized.
